From slipping, juddering and difficult gear changes to hydraulic faults, release-system problems and complete clutch replacement, we diagnose the cause before recommending the work your vehicle actually needs.
A slipping clutch, difficult gear changes, unusual noises or a change in pedal feel can have several possible causes. At CBC, we assess the clutch and its related components to identify what is actually causing the problem before recommending repair or replacement.
Assessing the symptoms and identifying the cause.
Clutch, hydraulics, release system and related components.
Trusted replacement components suited to your vehicle.
Repairs carried out properly, with attention to the complete job.
Clutch problems can come from more than one part of the system. From the clutch itself to hydraulics, release components, flywheels and mechanical linkages, we investigate the cause before recommending the right repair.
Diagnosis of slipping, juddering, difficult gear changes, unusual noises and other clutch-related symptoms.
Removal and replacement of worn or failed clutch components using quality parts suited to your vehicle.
Diagnosis and repair of clutch master cylinders, slave cylinders, hydraulic lines and related hydraulic faults.
Inspection and replacement of release bearings, concentric slave cylinders, forks and related release components.
Inspection for wear, heat damage and surface condition, with off-car skimming where appropriate.
Diagnosis and repair of clutch cables, linkages, adjustment problems and related mechanical faults.
Clutch problems can show up in different ways depending on whether the fault is with the clutch itself, the release system, hydraulics or related components.
Engine revs rise without the vehicle accelerating as expected.
Shaking or vibration as the clutch begins to engage.
Gears are difficult to engage or changing gear feels abnormal.
The pedal feels unusually soft, hard, low or inconsistent.
The pedal does not return normally after being pressed.
Squealing, grinding or other noises appear as the pedal is used.
A hot friction smell appears during acceleration or hill starts.
The engine speeds up but the vehicle does not accelerate with it.
A clutch replacement involves significant labour to remove and refit the gearbox. That makes it important to inspect the complete system while everything is accessible, rather than replacing one component and overlooking another problem.
Confirm the symptoms and assess clutch operation before dismantling.
Remove the gearbox and inspect the clutch assembly, release system and related components.
Assess the flywheel for wear, heat damage and surface condition, with off-car skimming where suitable.
Replace or repair the components required, reassemble correctly and check clutch operation.
The exact components fitted vary by vehicle. Some use conventional release bearings and external slave cylinders, while others use concentric slave cylinders or different clutch and flywheel arrangements.
Clutch work can involve significant labour. Our approach is to understand the fault, inspect the complete system and make sure the job is carried out properly from diagnosis through to reassembly.
We investigate the cause of the symptoms before recommending repair or replacement.
Clutch, flywheel, hydraulics, release system and related components are considered as part of the job.
We use trusted replacement parts selected for the specific vehicle and application.
With the gearbox out, accessible components are inspected so potential problems aren't simply ignored.
From the clutch and flywheel to the release system, hydraulics and linkages, we look at the complete picture before deciding what needs attention.
Clutch symptoms can have several possible causes. Here are some of the questions we are commonly asked about clutch diagnosis, repair and replacement.
Common symptoms include clutch slip, juddering when pulling away, difficulty selecting gears, unusual noises, a change in pedal feel or engine revs increasing without a corresponding increase in road speed. The symptoms alone do not always identify the exact fault, so proper diagnosis is important.
Clutch slip is commonly associated with worn or contaminated friction components, but the cause should be confirmed before replacement is recommended. We assess the symptoms and clutch operation before deciding what work is required.
A change in clutch pedal feel can be caused by several parts of the system, including hydraulic components, cables, linkages or the clutch release mechanism. The cause depends on the system fitted to the vehicle and needs to be diagnosed rather than assumed.
Clutch judder can occur when engagement is not smooth. Possible causes can involve the clutch friction surfaces, flywheel, contamination, wear or other related components. We inspect the system to determine what is causing the judder before recommending a repair.
Yes. Once the gearbox and clutch are removed, the flywheel can be inspected for wear, heat damage and surface condition. Depending on the type and condition of the flywheel, off-car skimming may be appropriate, or replacement may be recommended.
A concentric slave cylinder, often called a CSC, is a hydraulic clutch release component fitted around the gearbox input shaft inside the bellhousing. Because accessing it normally requires gearbox removal, its condition is important when clutch work is being carried out.
The labour involved varies considerably between vehicles because gearbox removal and access differ by make, model and drivetrain. Once we have your vehicle details and have assessed the job, we can give you a more accurate indication of the expected workshop time.
That depends on the fault and how severe it is. A clutch problem can worsen and may eventually leave the vehicle unable to drive or select gears normally. If the clutch is slipping badly, the pedal is not operating normally or the vehicle is difficult to control, it should be assessed as soon as possible.
