Specialist HBB Diagnosis Before Complete Replacement

Hydraulic Brake Booster (HBB) and related electro-hydraulic brake-assist systems use hydraulic pressure, electronic controls and system-specific components to provide braking assistance. When a fault develops, proper diagnosis matters. At CBC, we investigate the system to identify the actual cause of the problem before recommending repair or complete replacement.

What Can We Help With?

HBB faults can involve hydraulic pressure, electrical components, control systems or a combination of several issues. We diagnose the system properly to establish what has failed and what actually needs to be repaired.

Specialist HBB Repair

Before You Replace
The Complete Unit

An HBB system fault does not automatically mean that the complete assembly needs to be replaced.

These systems combine hydraulic pressure, an accumulator, pump and motor assemblies, sensors, electrical components and electronic controls. A fault in one area can affect the operation of the entire system. That is why we investigate the cause of the problem before recommending complete replacement.

01

Diagnose

Assess the system, fault codes, live data and reported symptoms.

02

Test

Test hydraulic pressure, pump operation, accumulator performance and electrical components.

03

Investigate

Identify the component or system fault responsible for the problem.

04

Repair Where Possible

Explore component-level repair or reconditioning where the system's condition and design allow it.

Not every HBB unit can be repaired. Our recommendation depends on the fault, condition and system fitted to your vehicle.

Why Choose CBC for HBB Repairs?

Complex braking systems need more than a fault-code scan. Our approach combines system knowledge, advanced testing and careful investigation before repair decisions are made.

Specialist Knowledge

Experience working with HBB and related electro-hydraulic brake-assist systems.

Advanced Diagnostics

Fault codes, live data, electrical testing and hydraulic system assessment.

Component-Level Investigation

We investigate individual components and system operation rather than assuming complete failure.

Safety First

Brake-system recommendations are made with safe and reliable operation as the priority.

Diagnose Before You Replace

Complete Replacement Isn't Always the Only Option.

An HBB system is made up of multiple hydraulic, electrical and electronic components. Where the system and its condition allow it, identifying and repairing the actual failed component may provide an alternative to replacing the complete assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about HBB brake systems, warning signs, diagnosis, repair and replacement.

HBB stands for Hydraulic Brake Booster. These systems use hydraulic pressure to provide braking assistance rather than relying solely on a conventional vacuum brake booster.

Depending on the vehicle, the system may incorporate an electric pump, hydraulic accumulator, pressure sensors or switches, valves and electronic controls. The exact design differs between manufacturers and models.

The most reliable way is to identify the braking system using the vehicle's make, model, year, variant and VIN.

Different models, and sometimes different variants of the same model, can use different brake-assist systems. We identify the exact system fitted before diagnosing faults or sourcing components.

Symptoms can include ABS or brake warning lights, warning buzzers, frequent pump operation, unusual pump noises, a hard brake pedal, changes in brake assistance, or multiple traction and stability-control warnings.

These symptoms do not identify the failed component by themselves, which is why proper system testing matters.

The pump generates hydraulic pressure while the accumulator stores pressure for the system. Some pump operation is therefore normal.

Unusually frequent cycling or continuous operation can indicate that the system is struggling to build or retain the required pressure. Testing is needed to establish why rather than automatically assuming the pump or accumulator has failed.

Complete replacement is not always the only option. Depending on the system, the actual fault and the condition of the unit, component-level repair or reconditioning may be possible.

Some units or faults will still require replacement. We diagnose the cause first and then recommend the appropriate repair, reconditioning or replacement route.

A brake-system warning should not be ignored. Depending on the fault, the vehicle may have reduced brake assistance or another safety-related braking issue.

If the brake pedal becomes hard, braking performance changes, warning buzzers sound, or a red brake warning appears, stop using the vehicle where it is safe to do so and arrange for the braking system to be assessed.

Hydraulic and electro-hydraulic brake-assist systems have been used across a range of vehicles, including certain Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus and Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero applications, among others.

There are important differences between manufacturers and generations, so the exact system fitted to the vehicle needs to be identified before diagnosis, repair or parts selection.

This depends on the vehicle, the fault and how much testing is required. Diagnosis may involve fault-code analysis, live data, electrical testing, hydraulic pressure testing and physical inspection.

If repair or reconditioning is required, the timeframe will also depend on the components involved and parts availability. Once the vehicle has been assessed, we can give you a clearer indication of the work required.
