BRAKE DISC, DRUM &
FLYWHEEL SKIMMING

We offer professional onboard and off-car brake disc skimming, brake drum skimming and flywheel skimming using specialist workshop equipment.

For brake components, skimming can restore a smooth, even braking surface and help correct issues caused by uneven wear, scoring or surface irregularities, provided the component remains within safe specifications.

For flywheels, precision skimming restores the mating surface before clutch installation where appropriate.

Brakes have always been at the core of what we do. It’s what built our reputation, and while CBC has grown far beyond brakes, specialist brake work remains at the heart of who we are.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Quick answers to common questions about brake repairs, maintenance, skimming and replacement.

How do I know if my brake pads are worn?

Common signs can include squealing or grinding noises, reduced braking performance, a warning indicator on some vehicles or visibly low friction material. Because symptoms vary between vehicles, an inspection is the best way to confirm brake pad condition.

How often should I change my brakes?

There is no fixed replacement interval that applies to every vehicle. Brake wear depends on the vehicle, driving style, road conditions, load and the components fitted. Rather than replacing brakes based on mileage alone, we recommend having them inspected during routine servicing and whenever you notice noise, vibration, reduced braking performance or a change in pedal feel.

My brakes squeal, but my friend says it’s just dust. Is that true?

Brake dust can sometimes contribute to noise, but squealing shouldn't automatically be dismissed as “just dust.” Brake noise can also be associated with pad material, wear, contamination, glazing, disc condition, hardware or other issues. Some brake noise can be harmless, while other noises indicate something that needs attention. If the noise is new, persistent or getting worse, it is worth having the brakes inspected.

Why does my steering wheel shake when braking?

A steering wheel vibration when braking can be caused by uneven brake disc surfaces, disc runout, worn braking components or other issues within the braking or suspension system. CBC can inspect the vehicle to identify the cause before recommending repair, skimming or replacement.

What causes a soft or spongy brake pedal?

A soft or spongy brake pedal can be associated with air in the hydraulic system, brake fluid issues, leaks or faults with hydraulic braking components. Because this can affect braking performance, the vehicle should be inspected rather than the symptom being ignored.

Do I need new discs when replacing brake pads?

Not necessarily. Brake discs should be inspected and measured when brake pads are replaced. If the discs remain within safe specifications and their condition allows it, they may still be serviceable or suitable for skimming. If they are too worn, damaged or below specification, replacement is the safer option.

How often should I have my brakes inspected?

Brake condition depends on the vehicle, driving conditions, mileage and how the vehicle is used. Brakes should form part of routine servicing and should also be inspected whenever you notice a change in braking performance, unusual noises, vibration or a brake warning light.

What is brake fluid, and how often should it be changed?

Brake fluid transfers hydraulic pressure from the brake pedal through the braking system. Over time, brake fluid can absorb moisture, which can affect its performance and reduce its boiling point. Replacement intervals vary by vehicle manufacturer, so the correct interval should be based on the vehicle's service requirements and the condition of the fluid rather than one universal mileage figure.

Can brake discs be skimmed instead of replaced?

In some cases, yes. Brake disc skimming can restore a smooth, even braking surface where there is suitable material remaining. CBC measures and assesses the disc before machining. If skimming would leave the disc outside safe specifications, we will recommend replacement instead.

My 4x4 is heavy. When do I need upgraded stopping power?

Extra weight, larger tyres, towing, accessories and demanding driving conditions can all increase the work your braking system has to do. A brake upgrade may be worth considering if your 4x4 regularly carries additional weight, tows, has been significantly modified or experiences brake fade or reduced braking confidence under demanding conditions. The right setup depends on the vehicle and how it is used, so we recommend assessing the complete braking system before choosing an upgrade.

Can you skim brake drums?

Yes. CBC offers off-car brake drum skimming where the drum is suitable for machining and remains within safe specifications. The drum is assessed before machining, and replacement will be recommended where skimming is not appropriate.

Can you skim flywheels?

Yes. CBC offers flywheel skimming where appropriate. Precision machining can restore the mating surface before clutch installation, subject to the condition, design and specifications of the flywheel.
